1881. In a remote Norwegian coastal town, old sins cast long shadows...

Over 25 years ago, Helen Alving fled from her unhappy marriage to the rich and outwardly respectable, but privately dissolute, Captain Alving. Horrified at her behaviour, family friend and local Lutheran minister Pastor Manders sent her back to her husband and her "duty". Now, 10 years after Alving's death, his widow is preparing for the dedication of a new orphanage she has built in his memory, and rejoicing in the company of their son Oswald, who has returned from Paris for the occasion. But the ghosts of old secrets and lies haunt the house and its occupants, leading to a terrible conclusion.
