Phyl Romeril:
PANTOMIME, it seems, is not just for Christmas, it can be adapted for almost any occasion as proven by Woodhouse Players in association with Theatretrain with Thos Ribbits’ and Tim Saward’s Dracula – The Vampire Strikes Back, a show that turned out to be a winner for both Hallowe'en and half-term.
The Welsh Church hall, despite a transformation, needed twice the space to gain a complete picture of the enormity of the event that was part of its 20th year celebrations.
The technicalities and effects were a phenomenal challenge and a great success. It was a young persons' show, and they freely demonstrated their skill and expertise, particularly bearing in mind the restricted area in which they were called upon to operate.
This version of Dracula was pure pantomime, with solos, choruses, boos, hisses and cheers – all essential but not losing the essence of the original dastardly plans of the vampire.
The cast was enormous with Michelene Heine proving to be a warm and embracing narrator. Steve Lawrence presented us with a confident young hero and sang his numbers in an attractive style.
Tania Riley, Sacha Walker, Jonathan Pease and Paul Robinson made a deep impression and, of course, Dracula towered above all.
Willy Williams put everything he could think of into the role of the awesome character up against the upright Professor, Phil Braithwaite.
Pure melodrama was never far away but most impressive were the professionally performed dance routines and the three endearing Mexican bats.
The technical achievements were proof of the value of professional training and the costumes, choreography and various settings were well arranged.
Overall, it was lots of fun, clearly projected by a collection of young people who should go far in the profession.
It was produced and directed by Thos Ribbits and Tim Saward, who also wrote the book, music and lyrics.
